Speaker Event – Environmental Injustice: Imminent Threat

April 10, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Jacqui Patterson and Sharon Lewis

The NAACP environmental justice committee is delighted to present our guest speakers Jacqui Patterson, National NAACP Environmental Justice Program Senior Director and Sharon Lewis, Director of Conn. Coalition for Environmental Justice. Ms. Patterson and Ms. Lewis have long histories of advocating about the environmental justice movement. Please join us in this rare opportunity to gain understanding in this critically important issue for our community and the world!

Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. This goal will be achieved only when everyone enjoys:

  • The same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards, and
  • Equal access to the decision-making process to have a healthy environment in which to live, learn, and work.

Ms. Patterson holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University. She currently serves on the International Committee of the US Social Forum, the Steering Committee for Interfaith Moral Action on Climate, Advisory Board for Center for Earth Ethics as well as on the Boards of Directors for the Institute of the Black World, Center for Story Based Strategy and the US Climate Action Network. She works tirelessly to educate about and to fight environmental inequities, as well as other injustices. She has authored articles on the subject including ”Jobs vs Health: An Unnecessary Dilemma”, “Climate Change is a Civil Rights Issue”, “Gulf Oil Drilling Disaster: Gendered Layers of Impact”, “Disasters, Climate Change Uproot Women of Color”; “Coal Blooded; Putting Profits Before People” and many more.

Ms. Lewis is an activist! She diligent works to create a world where no group of people–racial, ethnic or socioeconomic–bears a disproportionate share of the negative environmental consequences resulting from industrial, municipal, or commercial operations. She advocates for equitable policies and practices that promote healthy communities. Previously, she was the Lead Organizer and Special Projects Director for the Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice in Hartford, CT and a teacher in the Hartford public school system for 6 years. She also has extensive experience in the reinsurance and insurance industry having spent 17 years in the industry specializing in self-insurance.
